Solana Foundation Sets New Standard with Real-Time Emissions Tracking

• The Solana Foundation has announced its real-time emissions tracking for the Solana blockchain.
• The emissions measurement will include RPC nodes and instrumenting the underlying hardware, as well as marginal emissions, embodied emissions, and Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).
• This new tracker provides a detailed snapshot of the network’s climate impact and helps set a new standard for sustainable blockchain technology.

Solana Foundation Announces Real-Time Emissions Tracking

The Solana Foundation has taken a significant step towards sustainability by announcing its real-time emissions tracking for the Solana blockchain. The foundation collaborated with Trycarbonara, a carbon data platform, to create an emissions tracker that will embed software directly on Solana nodes.

What is Included in the New Tracker?

The new emission measurements includes several important factors not previously measured in blockchain technology such as RPC nodes, underlying hardware instrumentation, marginal emissions and Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). Additionally, it also takes into account geolocation of validator and RPC nodes, as well as embodied energy from manufacturing and transportation of hardware used in the network.

Why is this Important?

This new framework provides a more detailed understanding of the network’s carbon footprint which can be used when gauging environmental impacts of changes or optimizations to energy consumption. It also accounts for renewable energy mix of different sources of electricity used by validators to power their networks.

A New Standard For Blockchains

With this new tracker in place, Solana is setting a new standard for sustainable blockchain technology that other projects can follow suit. The tracker provides an overview of the total carbon emission and energy consumption along with comparison charts to better illustrate any changes over time.

Conclusion

The Solana Foundation’s new emissions tracker provides a detailed snapshot of the network’s climate impact and includes comparison charts that help put the overall environmental impact into perspective while allowing users to make more informed decisions about their own usage patterns.
